Mary Bratman was born in 1901 and spent her entire youth living in the wilderness of Northern Wisconsin. A Childhood in the Woods is Mary Bratman’s joyfulof family and childhood in a small one-room log cabin in those untamed forests. In 1961, her grandson handed a mimeographed request from his sixth-grade class to Mary. The request inquired about the childhoods of class members’ parents and grandparents. Mary Bratman, took this request to heart and wrote an eloquentof her experience growing up at the turn of the century in the wilderness of Wisconsin. Mary’s grandson, Roger Neumaier, saved his grandmother’s response to the class’s questions. Six decades later, he has published it with simple illustrations intended to assist small children visualize the wonderful images his grandmother created.A Childhood in the Woods is a child-friendly rendition of Mary Bratman’s memories. It serves as a wonderful introduction to some and as a reminder to others of daily life during a simpler time in our nation’s history.
